Autonomous Cars + IoT, and Life or Death Decisions – Part 3

Fire HD 10 Plus With Keyboard and Microsoft 365

I’ve been convinced that Amazon would eventually enter the PC market with a cloud-connected device for some time. Well, this month Amazon is finally going to make that prediction come true when it releases the new Fire HD 10 Plus tablet bundled with a keyboard and Microsoft 365.

Fully configured with the ad-supported discount (the ads show up on the login screen and cost $20 to get rid of), it’s priced at $289 for the 64GB version and one year of Office 365.

Compare that to a similarly configured iPad Air with keyboard and without the Office 365 subscription which costs around $778. Add the $99 one-year subscription for Office 365 to the iPad Air and you’re looking at $877 for a very similar product, for nearly three times the cost.

The iPad does have slightly better specs: 264 pixels per inch vs. the Fire’s 224; built-in biometric security, which the Fire lacks; and better cameras (7MP and 12MP vs. 2MP and 5MP). But, other than video conferencing (where 2MP is fine), how often are you going to use a tablet camera over your phone camera?

Apple states 10 hours of battery while Amazon says 12. This new Fire tablet comes with wireless charging and is loaded with Kindle, Amazon Prime, and Amazon Shopping apps; and it will run Netflix and most other streaming video apps.

This thing has all the stuff many people, particularly kids, need in a device. It costs less than a third of what an iPad costs and has decent eight-core performance.

All it needs is a resident AWS connection and virtual Windows, and you’d have a viable desktop computer. That isn’t here yet, but I bet it’s on the way. I think this is just Amazon dipping its toe into the business pool; it won’t be long till it comes up with another offering that better represents the entire AWS foot.

As I’ve noted in the past, I love a bargain. This new Fire HD 10 Plus tablet with keyboard and Office 365 looks like a great bargain, so it is my product of the week. You can preorder it now to ship on May 26.
