The Federal Government on Tuesday disbursed a total sum of N25m to five academies as a ‘token of appreciation’ for their contribution to national development. The academies are the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, the Nigerian Academy of Letters, the Nigerian Academy of Education and the Nigerian Academy of Social Science. Each academy received N5m.
The cash grant to the academies came 24 hours after the Federal Government, on Monday, also through the Ministry of Science and Technology, released cash grants totalling N81.5m to 26 inventors and innovators. The N81.5m is meant to encourage Nigerians with innovative and creative ideas to achieve technological breakthroughs for the country.
Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, while disbursing the N25m grant in Abuja on Tuesday urged the academies to work together and apply their knowledge to solve the numerous challenges facing the nation. He said the challenges included corruption and insecurity. The minister noted that the country’s economic challenges would only be surmounted with the application of knowledge-driven technology.
Onu said, “The academies are reservoirs of knowledge, which should be of great benefit to the nation in her bid to achieve greatness. “Only the best minds, ideas and innovations are good for Nigeria.”
