Fresh Kano fire kills three, razes filling station
Another fire outbreak hit Kano on Wednesday and killed three persons and razed a filling station and a fuel tanker.
The filling station, owned by A. A. Rano, a popular petroleum products marketer on Bompai Road, adjacent to the Grand Central Hotel, was completely razed.

 

Anger in police hospitals over unpaid allowances
There is anger at the Police Hospital, Falomo, Ikoyi, and the Police Cottage Hospital, Ikeja, in Lagos State, over six-year allowances that are allegedly owed the rank and file medical policemen by the police authorities.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the non-payment of the allowances, which were to come with promotion, affected about 50 policemen serving in the hospitals.

 

13 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway fire
No fewer than 13 persons have been killed after fire gutted five vehicles at the Lotto, Mowe end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.
While some of the deceased were reported to have been scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, others were said to be passengers in a commercial bus and two Hilux vans.

 

Fake army captain harasses policemen for seizing motorcycle
A suspected fake army captain, George Edem, has been arrested in the Ikeja area of Lagos State after he allegedly tried to secure the release of an impounded motorcycle.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Edem, who walked into the office of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit in Alausa on Tuesday, allegedly harassed policemen on duty and was ushered in to see the task force chairman.

 

Hoodlums attack policemen, stab sergeant
Two of the hoodlums, terrorising the Elegbata area on the Lagos Island, Lukman Kayode, 29; and 19-year-old Olusegun Ayanniyi, have been arrested after they reportedly attacked some policemen.
A sergeant, Tunde Adeyemi, was stabbed in the head during the attack, which lasted for about 30 minutes.

 

Six feared dead as customs, smugglers clash
No fewer than six persons were feared dead on Sunday after the men of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun State Command, and smugglers clashed at Oke-Odan, in the Yewa South Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were said to be three children and three adult residents of the town, who were hit by stray bullets in the shoot-out.

 

Filling station accuses police of blackmail
The Manager of the Oando Filling Station on the Otedola Bridge end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Mr. Rasak Fakayode, and the Director of the station, Mr. David Adegbite, have accused the police of blackmail.
Fakayode said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Isheri division, identified as Ogundele, framed up the station.

 

Driver impersonates air force officer, extorts money
A fake Nigerian Air Force officer, Muhammed Abdullahi, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly using the force uniform to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
He was brought before Chief Magistrate O.A. Olayinka on three counts bordering on impersonation and fraud.

 

Four children die after locking themselves in car
Tragedy struck in Dattawa, in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as four children suffocated after mistakenly locking themselves in a car.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the children – Umar Mansir (male, 9); Maryam Salisu (female, 12); Sadiyya Bashir (female, 7); and Fatima Ibrahim (female, 3) – lived with their parents in Rigasa Quarters and always played together.

 

Kwara applicants allege extortion by liaison office
Some Kwara State citizens have decried the non-issuance of receipts by the officials of the Kwara State Liaison Office, Victoria Island, Lagos State, who daily collect the sum of N2,000 each from applicants seeking to obtain state of origin certificates.
The citizens condemned the refusal by the liaison office to issue receipts to applicants after the payment of N2,000 each, saying that such an action was an avenue to extort Kwara citizens and defraud the government.

 

Army Corporal sells fake uniform to ND holder for N5,000
A fake Nigerian Air Force officer, Muhammed Abdullahi, has been arrested and charged to court for allegedly using the force uniform to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
When Mohammed sensed the game was up, the 32-year-old confessed that he bought the uniform from a soldier friend for N5,000.

 

Electricity to be rationed in VI, Ikoyi, Lekki — EKO DISCO
The management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company has announced that beginning from today, May 3, there will be power rationing in Lekki, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and some parts of Ajah, all in Lagos Island.
A statement from the Corporate Communications Department of the company in Lagos signed by its General Manager, Corporate Communications, Godwin Idemudia, and made available to Lagos Metro on Monday stated that the power rationing was to enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to upgrade both Line 1 and Line 2 of Ajah-Alagbon transmission line from 132kv to 330kv.

Academic activities are expected to resume today at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), after a three-week break occasioned by a students’ protest that crippled activities on the campus for more than 48 hours.
The management of the institution at the weekend said nearly 20, 000 students had already downloaded their letters of undertaking and indemnity form, ahead of resumption today.

 

Danfo driver throws wife inside gutter for refusing him sex, more babies
A sex hungry commercial driver has been arrested and charged to court after he allegedly assaulted his wife when she refused to give him sex and more children.
Obinna James was arrested and charged before Apapa Magistrate’s court for allegedly brutalising his wife, Ebere when she refused to have sex with him.

 

Ogun assembly passes bill on creation of new LCDAs
Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Local Government (Creation and Transitional provisions) Amendments Bill 2016 into law with a call for creation of more Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in future.

 

Ekweremadu visits Nimbo community, donates transformer
DEPUTY Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, has visited the troubled Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Protest in Aba as soldiers allegedly kill two butchers
What would have been a major ethnic clash was averted yesterday in Aba, Abia State following protests over alleged killings of two Igbo butchers at the Waterside abattoir by soldiers. Vanguard gathered  that penultimate week, an unnamed soldier  in mufti, reportedly  went to the abattoir to smoke Indian hemp after which he refused to pay, claiming he was a soldier.

 

23-year-old arrested for dropping human head on road
The police in Lagos State have arrested a 23-year-old suspected cultist, Idris Adebayo, who confessed to have dropped the head of a rival cult member on the Old Apapa Road, in the Oyingbo area of the state.
Adebayo, who said he put the head in a polythene bag, added that the victim was killed by his gang members and the head dumped by the roadside because he came to visit his girlfriend in their territory.
