Lagos to prosecute tax defaulters from April 1

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service says it will commence the prosecution of tax evaders and offenders in the state from April 1, 2016. The LIRS in a statement by its Executive Chairman, Mr. Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, on Wednesday said the move became necessary because a large number of Lagosians had not paid their taxes although the law stated that eligible tax payers must pay within 90 days of the New Year.

Gunmen kill man in mother’s presence

Some gunmen on Tuesday shot dead a man, identified simply as Akor, in Rumuche community, in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.It was gathered that
Akor, 23, was killed in his father’s compound around 10pm. It was learnt that the assailants dragged their victim out of bed. A neighbour, Mr. Chizi Enyi, said Akor was shot in the presence of his mother.

Kogi crisis deepens as police seal off assembly

Power outage: Soldiers invade IBEDC office, torture worker

Workers of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company say they have become fearful in their office after some soldiers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala
Barracks, Abeokuta, Ogun State, allegedly beat up one of them over “poor power” supply. They told our correspondent that the soldiers, numbering about six and led by one Major Musa, stormed the IBEDC substation – Olumo business hub, Rounder – on March 6 and met one of them, Salau Adekunle, on duty.

UNILAG students arrested for attempting to resurrect colleague

Four students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for attempting to resurrect the corpse of a 300-level
student of Microbiology, Eniola Jacob. PUNCH Metro learnt that the parents of the deceased, who were not comfortable with the students’ antics, invited policemen from the Ifo Police Division who arrested the undergraduates.

Dismissed police officer jailed 3 years for impersonation

A dismissed police officer, Okpambe Anthony, has been sentenced to three years in prison for parading himself as a serving policeman. Anthony, 36-year-old, who pleaded guilty to the charge of impersonation when he was arraigned, was sentenced by an Ojo Chief Magistrate, Paul Adedamola after he was found guilty.

2,500 nursing mothers get free medical care in Enugu

No fewer than 2500 nursing mothers are benefiting from a free medical care in Enugu State under the auspices of Childhood Neuropsychiatric Disorders Initiatives,CNDI.
The CNDI Chairman, Dr. Muideen Owolabi Bakare, who briefed newsmen, yesterday, said the programme was taking place in Enugu and Lagos simultaneously.

New monetary policy pulls out N744bn from circulation

Due to its new monetary policy drive the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, may be pulling out up to N1.0 trillion from circulation in the economy through the banking system in the first month of its new monetary policy. Already N525 billion has been pulled out less than one week after the policy which seeks to tighten money supply, while additional N219 billion is slated to be pulled out next week, just as banks’ treasury executives said they were preparing their treasury plans for more mop ups estimated to be up to N300 billion within the next three weeks.

Driver, conductor rape Lagos job seeker

The police in Lagos have arrested a commercial bus driver, identified only as Akeem, and his conductor, Sodiq, for allegedly robbing and raping a 22-year-old lady in the Costain, Iponri area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that Akeem and Sodiq, along with two others still at large, had picked the victim, Mercy (pseudonym) from the Obalende area, and were supposed to head for the Victoria Island where the victim reportedly had a job interview.

Kidnapped Kaduna pastor found dead, abductors release others

The decomposing body of one of the three Christian clerics abducted at gunpoint by yet-to-be identified gunmen in Kaduna State has been found. President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria, also known as HEKAN, Rev. Emmanuel Dziggau; Rev. Yakubu Dzarma; and Rev. Iliya Anto, were abducted on March 21 along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway where they had gone to check a piece of land for the church seminary.

New Felele, Soka communities undertake N5m projects

New Felele, Soka and environs, in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State, comprising 58 zones, have embarked on over N5 million development projects, which
include the construction of a bridge. The President, New Felele, Soka and Environs’ Landlords Association, Engineer Omotayo Runsewe, said that apart from the bridge project, the communities, with over 40,000 people, had also embarked on road excarvation and grading so as to ensure good drainage system.

Kogi gov’s wife boosts rural health, education

The wife of Kogi State governor, Mrs Rashida Bello, has boosted rural healthcare delivery and education in the three senatorial districts of the state with the
renovation of primary healthcare centres and provision of educational materials. The governor’s wife also donated drugs and medical equipment to the health centres.
The  health facilities are located in Ekirinade, Ijumu Local Government Area, Emonyokwu Ogugu in Olamaboro Local Government Area and Agassa in Okene Local Government Area.

Fayose condemns arrest of 76 Igbo villagers for protesting against Fulani herdsmen

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has condemned the alleged arrest of 76 villagers from Ugwuneshi Autonomous community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu
State following an alleged clash between the natives and Fulani herdsmen. Fayose said in a statement on Thursday that “It has gotten to a level that lovers of
peace in Nigeria must speak out on this keg of gun powder which is the threat that the Fulani herdsmen has become.”

Police nab 3 gunsmiths in Abia

Men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, stationed at Obehie Division, Abia State, have arrested three suspects for allegedly manufacturing and selling
guns. The suspects; Ejiofor Kanu, Udo Nwanmuo Jacob and Allwell Anyanwu, who are said to be natives of Ukwa West council area of the state, were arrested at different
locations in the area following a tip off.

Forex: J$122.04 to one US dollar

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaican dollar on Thursday, March 31, ended trading at J$122.04, up by seven cents, according to the Bank of Jamaica’s daily foreign exchange trading summary. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar ended trading at J$92.52, up from J$91.89, while the British pound sterling ended trading at J$173.46, up from J$172.67.

Shaw says transfer pricing tax will not be retroactive

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Minister of Finance and the Public Service Audley Shaw says the Government will not implement the retroactive provision under the transfer pricing tax regime. “I am not going to insist that the transfer pricing submissions be made retroactive to last year. It does not make sense,” Shaw asserted, while addressing a Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) President’s Forum, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, on March 29.
