The 2nd Edition of the Courteville Cup kicked off on Saturday December 1st, 2018 with the host team and defending Champions Courteville FC taking on last year’s runner-up, Christ Apostolic Church Football Club of Yaba (C.A.C FC) in the first game of the day. It was the 5th time both sides were meeting and Courteville FC had the bragging rights with 2 wins and 2 draws prior to this game. It was a battle of who wanted it more and C.A.C FC drew first blood by bagging a goal to go into the break with a 1 nil lead.
The Courteville lads returned from the break pressing for the equalizer and creating chance after chance before getting a deserved equalizer to level scores at 1:1. The teeming Courteville FC supporters kept cheering their team on as they searched for the game winning goal. The hosts were awarded a penalty during the course of the game but the goalkeeper who decided to shoulder the responsibility ballooned the ball into the stands to ensure the score stayed the same.
The winning goal did come at the death of the game and no prizes for guessing right who scored, the game was Courteville FC’s as they progressed to semi-final with a 2:1 win to be on course to retain the trophy.
The other fixtures saw Credit Direct FC beat Westhood FC 4:2 on penalties after playing out a goalless draw in regulation to secure a semi-final berth. The Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) team played out a 1 all draw with TMC and nicked the tie 5:4 on penalties to also book a place in the semi-final.
In the final match of the day, Jackson, Etti and Edu (JEE) surprisingly pipped AutoReg Agents 2:1 to the last semi-final slot despite going a man down early in the second half.
It seemed to be a day of the underdogs.
